This one- hour presentation begins with an image of The Torah (Hebrew Bible). The word “Torah” is Hebrew for “teaching,” one of the central concepts of Judaism. From the Torah (Deut. 6:4-9; 11:13-21; Num. 15: 37-4) comes the “SHEMA,” or watchword of Judaism.
These words and a few additional High Holiday prayers (Kaddish, Avenu Malkenu, Unetaneh Tokef, and Kol Nidre) lead to familiar images in various media and from many different times and places. The menorah (7-branched Lamp) is seen in stone, manuscript illumination, stained glass, and in other settings. The Magen David (Jewish 6-pointed star) is also shown in a wide range of contexts, including a note card of dried flowers from Mount Sion.
An image from the 13th century Book of Jonah (read on Yom Kippur) leads to paintings, architecture, ritual objects, sculpture, and an early 20th c. New years Greeting Card. The program ends with Apples and Honey and a wish for a Sweet and Happy New Year.
