A view of The Torah (Hebrew Bible) begins this one- hour presentation. The word “TORAH” is Hebrew for “teaching,” one of the central concepts of Judaism.
From the Torah (Deut. 16: 16) comes the explanation for the FEAST OF BOOTHS. A 15TH C. image from a manuscript begins the visual journey of the celebration of Sukkot through time and various places.
From Leviticus 23:40, the method of celebration is explained. A Book of Customs provides images of the LULAV (four species) and the SUKKAH (Tabernacle). The next two Leviticus verses give further explanation of the manner of celebration. A variety of 18th and 19th c. images and objects give evidence of observance.
Moving into the 20th c., the artworks acquire the stylistic aesthetics of modernism. paintings by Solomon Hart, Isidor Kauffmann, Marc Chagall, and Jakob Steinhardt celebrating Sukkot and leading to Simhat Torah complete this program.
